IBM 5796 Business and Management Research Seminar
Spring 2005
Coordinator: Dr. Tang Yingchan, Edwin

I.     COURSE OBJECTIVE

The primary objective of this seminar course, along with the accompanying Graduate Course Requirement and Thesis Form and Style Review, is to assist those presently enrolled in the Master of Business & Management at National Chiao Tung University, in understanding the culminating degree requirement while also ensuring a quality contribution to the body of business management research. In particular, this seminar course is designed to:

  1. consider major contemporary issues in business management,
  2. understand the history and evolution of business management thoughts,
  3. search for possible thesis topics or evaluate student's preliminary thesis proposal,
  4. enhance the ability to conduct scientifically respectable research and to
  5. evaluate research in a professional-critical manner.

The prerequisites for this course are the general business management  required courses.  It is recommended students should have taken at least half of eight required discipline courses (including marketing management, finance management, management information system, operation management, human resource management, organizational behavior, business law, and strategic management).

II.    COURSE FORMAT

Since this is a seminar course, full participation will be expected from all students. Discussions will be conducted in an open atmosphere with free form of expression. The professor will be primarily a facilitator for discussion and not a lecturer. For this reason, it is imperative that all reading assignments should be read thoroughly. Depending on professor's preference, there are two to five articles for each management discipline.  The professor will choose one article as the discussion topic; the presentation team and the defending team have to thoroughly prepare and present the article in the class.
